Loving God, Loving Our Neighbors

The Robert Hughes Troop 17

January 28, 2010

UPDATE - Happy New Year! Troop 17 celebrates one year since being
re-chartered and looking back over the past year, we have accomplished a
lot including the formation of a good scout committee and re-purchase of
basic equipment for our troop, including two Kayaks. In the upcoming year,
we will have even more activities than in the past - more camping and
cliff climbing, more kayaking, more hiking and in particular more contact
with our council and activities sponsored by the council. We have an
excellent council with a brand new scouting center in Evandale, Ohio.
The Scout Store has been re-located there and is better than ever. We
have made one trip to the Scout Store with our troop and plan another
in the near future. Also, we hope to recruit more members for our
Troop this year and to accomplish this we will be visiting other local
churches and schools - our goal is to have a dozen boys by years end!

One of the primary goals of Boy Scouts is to have fun! We have fun hiking,
camping, playing sports and much more. The new focus of Troop 17 in
this age of satellite TV, video games, football, iPods, etc., will be a
competition between Scouts for advancement and in the Merit Badge
Program. The recommended pace for advancement is one rank per year.
If a boy joins the Troop at age 11, he should attain the rank of Eagle Scout
around his 17th birthday. Eagle Scouts have always out-achieved their
contemporaries, becoming CEOs, Teachers, Astronauts, Civic Leaders,
just to name a few - and just better citizens in general.

Since January 1934, when Troop 17 was first chartered, there has been
a long history of serving the boys who have joined our organization.
The Scout program has constantly focused on building character and
leadership skills. The Scouts have always been given the opportunity
to give something back to their community too.

The new Merit Badge Program contains well over 100 badges to choose
from. Modern Merit Badges include such specialties as First Aid, Fire
Safety and many different sports. A Scout can even earn a merit badge
in Astronomy or Computers!
